The Group heard from Ann Marie Lawson and Inspector Julie Mead about the good works of the Jam Team which operate under the umbrella charity Groundwork. The Jam Team, is a unique instant response detached youth work programme of intervention, that uses informal education to divert young people from anti-social behaviour, crime and violence. We learnt that the following a 3 month pilot scheme in 2007 anti social behaviour reduced by 45%!
A team of 8 youth workers in partnership with Northamptonshire Police and Corby Borough Council target hotspot areas to engage young people, who are creating youth nuisance through their attitudes and behaviour, into positive activities and meaningful social action. Youth workers are out on the streets of Corby 7 nights per week, 365 days per year and have won many awards including the National Tilley Award, Howard League for Penal Reform Award, Spirit of Corby Award and Ann-Marie Lawson was named National Youth Agency’s Youth worker of the Year in 2014.
